WHAT IS FMUN?

FMUN is a one-day bi-annual conference hosted by Shanghai Fudan International School (FDIS) once every semester. Like MUN conferences in general, FMUN focuses on controversial global issues. The FMUN adopts a Rules of Procedure based on the UNA-USA Rules-of-Procedure Framework; however, suitable modifications are made to suit FMUN’s nature as a local one-day conference. Delegates of FMUN will participate in engaging debates over trans-national movements, international disputes, and diplomatic crises. Participation in FMUN, however, exceeds simple debate. Prior to the conference, extensive research is required from participants to create their opening speeches and draft resolutions. In the first half of the conference day known as the lobbying session—when delegates form blocs and create a combined resolution submitted on behalf of the entire bloc—participants would practice their collaborative skills and negotiation techniques as they merge their ideas, make appropriate compromises, and reach final agreements. After the submission of the bloc’s draft resolution, participants will engage in intensive debate sessions to finally pass their proposed resolution. A comprehensive succession of skills can be applied in the FMUN, and in the end, delegates receiving best evaluations from the committee chairs will be awarded to certify their outstanding performance.

PAST CONFRENCES

On May 26, 2018, Fudan International School hosted its very first Model United Nations. Although only one committee– Legal Committee with the topic of "The Creation of International Gun Laws," it was a success. Great things start small, and FMUN I consisted of a plethora of passionate debates on exceptional resolution papers. Throughout the whole day, laughter filled the committee room; speeches echoed and motions passed. All participants were left with a memorable experience and new friends. The vast majority returned for FMUN II.

Fast forward some months, FMUN II was held on December 8th, 2018. This time, with three populated committees and participants over five different schools. Keeping last year's tradition; This year, the Legal Committee focused on "The Legalization of Euthanasia", along with two new committees– Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) on the topic of "Humanitarian Aid" and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on "Global Warming Mitigation". Time sped by in FMUN II. Impressive opening speeches, note papers flew around the room, amendments proposed, debates thrived, friends introduced and faces smiled. Perhaps by the end of the day, everyone was rewarded with more experience or more knowledge on a topic they weren't familiar with.

Over the years FMUN have been dedicated to hosting conferences to foster debate and education on issues of global significance. Through FMUN III and FMUN IV we saw the attendance of even more talented and returning delegates. After the pandemic FMUN held it's first offline conference in over a year, FMUN V, on May 15th, 2021. At this particular conference delegates in Security Council debated about amendments to the UN Charter, in SOCHUM delegates discussed about genocides and human rights, while DISEC took to the issue of deactivating landmines.
